Watchmaking 110th Anniversary
Seiko's founder Kintaro Hattori opened a shop in Tokyo's Ginza district in 1881 to sell timepieces, essentially beginning the history of Seiko. Kintaro's company produced Japan's first wristwatch, the Laurel, in 1913 and has since perfected the development of the wristwatch, both in technology and craft. This year, Seiko celebrates the 110th anniversary of Japan's first wristwatch with the release of a series of commemorative watches, including a new King Seiko watch that draws inspiration from Seiko's rich technological and design history. Returning last year, the vintage-influenced King Seiko collection with its clean lines and elegant appearance immediately appealed to watch enthusiasts around the world.
Design

The color gradient dial plays with light in an enchanting way. And upon closer inspection, the design reveals a traditional Japanese geometric pattern known as Kikkoumon. This pattern is based on the hexagonal shape of the turtle's shell. In Japanese culture, the turtle is the symbol of longevity and prosperity. In addition, the hexagonal shape is associated with the samurai armor, which stands for strength and victory. Plus, the Kikkoumon pattern is a stylish nod to King Seiko's 1960s origins. This Seiko collection was born at a facility in the Kameido area of Tokyo. A neighborhood once known as Kameshima. This area is bordered by rivers and streams and is also called 'Turtle Island'. The dial offers tremendous visual depth and texture; each hexagon is actually a series of three hexagons - each slightly deeper than the last - and this depth is enhanced throughout the dial by a gradual transition from light to dark, from the center to the edges.
